Actress Scarlett Johansson, with two Academy Award nominations to her name, remains puzzled over the lack of recognition for *Avengers: Endgame*, the 2019 Marvel Cinematic Universe blockbuster in which she portrayed Black Widow. In a candid conversation with Vanity Fair, Johansson expressed her bewilderment: "How did this film not get nominated for an Oscar?" She highlighted the film's complexity and success, stating, "It was an impossible movie that should not have worked, that really works as a film — and also, it's one of the most successful films of all time."
*Avengers: Endgame* is widely regarded as one of the finest achievements in the MCU's recent catalog. However, the Academy has historically been reluctant to award superhero films with top honors, such as nominations in acting or directing categories. The only Marvel film to break this trend so far has been 2018's *Black Panther*. Despite this, Johansson's performance as Natasha Romanoff, from her debut in 2010's *Iron Man* to her poignant end in *Endgame*, was considered by many to be worthy of an award.
In the same interview, Johansson hinted at her departure from the Marvel universe, stating, "It would be very hard for me to understand in what capacity [returning] would make sense for me, for the character that I play." She emphasized the completeness of her character's arc, saying, "I miss my buddies and really would love to be with them forever, but what works about the character is that her story is complete. I don’t want to mess with that. For fans, too — it’s important for them."
Following Black Widow's demise in *Endgame*, Johansson made a final appearance as Natasha Romanoff in the 2021 prequel film *Black Widow*, which she also executive produced.
