Ubisoft Revives Splinter Cell with New Steam Achievements for 12-Year-Old Game

Good news for fans of Sam Fisher: Ubisoft has shown that it hasn’t forgotten about the iconic Splinter Cell franchise. In a recent move, the developer added Steam Achievements to Splinter Cell: Blacklist, originally released in 2013.

While the most recent substantial update regarding the Splinter Cell Remake dates back to 2022 — when IGN met with Ubisoft Toronto developers to explore their vision for the project — the studio quietly updated the achievement list for the 12-year-old Blacklist on Steam.

In a statement, Ubisoft said: “Agents, we are pleased to announce that Steam Achievements are now available for Splinter Cell: Blacklist!

The new achievements will be “retroactively earned for accomplishments already completed in your game,” though you’ll need to launch the game at least once to sync progress. “Once synced, the previously unlocked Ubisoft Connect achievements will automatically unlock on Steam,” the team clarified.

Not only did Ubisoft take the time to implement achievements that can be earned retroactively, but it also made the decision not to include the additional 19 online achievements found on console versions. This ensures players can still achieve a full 100% completion on Steam without requiring multiplayer participation.

Looking ahead, the beloved stealth-action series is preparing for a major return with a complete remake of the original game, Splinter Cell Remake. While details remain scarce, it’s known that the title is being developed from the ground up using the powerful Snowdrop engine.

“Twenty years later, we can look back at the plot, the characters, and the overall story of the game — and make some improvements where necessary,” explained creative director Chris Auty. “Some elements might not have aged well, but the core story and gameplay experience will stay true to the original.”

Last month, Ubisoft announced the formation of a new subsidiary focused on its top franchises — including Assassin’s Creed, Far Cry, and Tom Clancy’s Rainbow Six — backed by a €1.16 billion (approximately $1.25 billion) investment from Chinese tech giant Tencent.

This development followed the successful player milestone of Assassin’s Creed Shadows, which surpassed 3 million players. The company faced significant challenges leading up to the game’s release, including several high-profile flops, layoffs, studio closures, and canceled projects. With its stock price hitting record lows, there's immense pressure on Shadows and future titles to deliver strong results and help restore confidence in the brand.
