David Leitch, the acclaimed director behind films like *Atomic Blonde* (2017), *Deadpool 2* (2018), *Hobbs & Shaw* (2019), and *Bullet Train* (2022), is reportedly in negotiations to direct the highly anticipated *Gears of War* movie for Netflix. This project marks the adaptation of Microsoft's iconic third-person action game, promising an explosive cinematic experience.
Leitch will be joined by his producing partner Kelly McCormick, and they will collaborate with *Gears* developer The Coalition. The screenplay is being penned by Jon Spaihts, known for his work on *Dune*. It has been over two years since Netflix acquired the rights to *Gears of War*, and it appears that the project is now gaining significant momentum. Alongside the movie, an adult animation series is also in development, set to follow the film's release. Should these adaptations succeed, fans can look forward to even more *Gears* content.
The casting of Marcus Fenix, the protagonist of *Gears of War*, is a topic of much interest. Dave Bautista, a former wrestler turned actor, has publicly expressed his strong desire to portray Marcus Fenix, and he has received endorsement from *Gears* co-creator Cliff Bleszinski.
The current landscape for video game adaptations is thriving, with hits like *The Super Mario Bros. Movie*, *A Minecraft Movie*, and the *Sonic* movies setting box office records. Other successful adaptations include the *Uncharted* movie, *Mortal Kombat* movie, and various *Resident Evil* films.

In a recent statement, Microsoft gaming chief Phil Spencer emphasized that the company remains committed to video game adaptations despite the mixed reception of the *Halo* TV series. Spencer noted that Microsoft is learning from its experiences and gaining confidence in this field. He mentioned that while some projects may not meet expectations, the overall trajectory is positive, and fans should anticipate more adaptations in the future.
"We’re learning and growing through this process, which is giving us more confidence that we should do more,” Spencer said. “We learned from doing *Halo*. We learned from doing *Fallout*. So all of these build on themselves. And obviously we’ll have a couple that miss. But what I’d say to the Xbox community that likes this work is, ‘You’re going to see more, because we’re gaining confidence and we’re learning through this.’ ”
In the realm of video games, The Coalition is currently developing *Gears of War: E-Day*, a prequel to the series. While a release date has not yet been announced, anticipation for this new chapter in the *Gears* saga continues to build.
